Description: Extensive research has shown that childhood trauma has many adverse physical, social, and emotional effects that can persist across the lifespan. This course will provide an advanced understanding of these effects with specific examples of ways they can present in people’s life, relationships, and physical & mental health.
Clinicians will be provided with in-depth examples of specific types of trauma and attachment wounds, defense mechanisms, and ways these show up in adulthood. Clinicians will leave the training with a more advanced understanding of childhood trauma, how it can show up later in life, and specific ways to help clients build resilience and begin the process of healing.
Case studies and interactive discussions will be used to help clinicians learn clinical interventions and activities they can use with clients who have experienced early childhood trauma. A 5 step process for helping clients identify, heal, and transcend old trauma wounds will be examined, with take-away worksheets clinicians can use with their clients in session. Course
Objectives: Participants will learn about major findings of the Adverse Childhood Events study including specific adult risk health and mental health factors linked to childhood trauma Participants will become familiar with the ACES, PCES, and Adult Resilience surveys and know how to use these responsibly in therapy sessions with clients and families.
Participants will be able to identify the 3 categories of coping styles, examples of maladaptive styles of coping, ways they can manifest in adulthood Participants will learn at least 3 different trauma interventions drawn from Evidence Based Practices they can use with survivors of childhood trauma to help build resilience Participants will be able to define the term posttraumatic growth and name at least one way they can help their clients achieve this

Working with resistant, defensive and disengaged clients is one of the common pain points mental health clinicians face. This training will help participants better understand, identify and overcome the root causes of resistance and non-engagement in therapy. Participants will be provided with information to help identify different forms of defensive and resistant behaviors that can interfere with treatment and will learn strategies to help with each.
This three hour live virtual training will focus on providing practical skills that can help clinicians build stronger alliances with difficult, defensive or disengaged clients through the use of person-centeredness and motivational interviewing. Tips on how to improve rapport, identify and repair therapeutic ruptures, and increase buy in for treatment will be discussed and practiced through interactive discussions, role-plays and case examples.
